Continuing Catherine's Journey

Dr Catherine Hamlin was a pioneering Australian surgeon whose work for women with obstetric fistula (a terrible and preventable childbirth injury) in Ethiopia continued uninterrupted for more than half a century.

No other woman, or man, has done as much to eradicate this preventable, debilitating condition and give these women back their lives. Catherine was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and received numerous international awards for her work.

Under Dr Catherine Hamlin’s pioneering guidance, over 60,000 Ethiopian women with obstetric fistula have had their lives transformed under the Hamlin Model of Care.

The team at Hamlin continues to carry Catherine’s torch and vision. Thanks to supporters like you, we can continue Catherine's journey and end fistula.

From our theatre to yours!

When Janeen Coles’ dear colleague, Dr Ronald Vaughan, announced his retirement as a surgeon at Forbes hospital, she proposed that his retirement afternoon tea be a fundraiser for the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation. Dr Vaughan has made donations to help fistula patients in lieu of Christmas presents for many years.

“We are so lucky in our country that we don’t see this horrific trauma of childbirth. If we can do anything to help the plight of these women in Ethiopia, we should,” explains Janeen.

Their ‘High Tea for Hamlin’ was a huge success! Their motto for the occasion was ‘From our theatre to yours’ and they well exceeded their target of funding one fistula surgery!
